Black Out - Dining in Total Darkness!!
"Valentine’s dinner.
But if, for some reason, you still haven’t made plans—busy week untagging Super Bowl party photos, last-minute date with ScarJo—you’re probably out of luck.
Well, if it weren’t for this...
Introducing Opaque, a two-hour, four-course meal in complete darkness, available now through Monday at the Aloft hotel.
Okay, first things first—it’s not exclusively on Valentine’s Day. It’s technically every night this weekend. But given the proximity to February 14... well, your date is going to consider it a Valentine’s dinner. So you have to, too.
Now, you should also know that the concept comes from Germany, where blind waiters (really) would serve dinner in a pitch-black room to heighten all the other senses—including your sixth sense for finding the butter.
So first you’ll line up two seats for you and your fearless date. Then you’ll head to the basement of the Aloft downtown. Here, you’ll be greeted by a waiter, who’ll whisk you away to a blacked-out dining room.
After being guided to your table, you’ll start your four-course expedition into complete and total darkness. Soon, you’ll be slicing fish, sipping wine, passing plates of watermelon gazpacho and chocolate almond mousse cake, asking whose foot that was...
At least, we think that was gazpacho."

Sounds like an interesting concept for sure.
Could you convince your spouse to go?
I think Gabe would be sold.

I think it might be an interesting experience!!
It would definitely be interesting and something new and exciting!
Wow that is definitely new! I don't think that would be my thing. I'm klutzy enough with the lights on!
It kinda creeps me out. I don't know if I could do it!
That's different. I don't think I could do it though. Kinda creepy!
i think this sounds so interesting and cool! i would for sure want to try it some day and i think my hubby would as well ;)
The idea sounds cool... but when I mentioned it to my cop husband (who thinks everyone is a "bad guy") he was not cool with it at all.... of course he always thinks everything is a crime scene waiting to happen...
However... from the flip side.. I bet its easier on the chefs not having to worry about presentation
My hubby ate at a place like this in Montreal during a business trip. The client had set it up. He said it was totally awkward, especially since he only really knew one other person. I don't think I could ever convince him to try it again!
I love the concept and would totally try it!
The have a restaurant like that in SF that does it year around! I think that is a great idea to do with Tim. It would be so interesting - they say you really focus on the taste of the food!
You need to watch Kristen Bells movie When in Rome there is a whole scene where Josh Dumahel whatever his last name is lol aka fergies Hubby takes Kristen out to a restaurant to dine in the dark!
That sure sounds interesting! Sadly, we don't have something like this here. I'm planning on a candlelight dinner though (cliche but romantic and our first!!!)
Happy Valentine's!
It sounds interesting but I'd be worried the whole time about dropping stuff or cutting myself.
ooh, that sounds like so much fun - I would LOVE to do that!
I would totally do it in a heartbeat!
They did this in the movie When in Rome. I think it would be interesting for sure. It looks super fun though.!!
I wuold hate this! I don't even like waking up in the middle of the night and walking to the bathroom in the dark! No thank you!
New here and saying "Hello". I think it would be fantastic to try...once. It reminds me of that movie. Oh gosh, what is it called?!?
