Panic Attack

As I was sitting in church listening to a relevant sermon on life experiences making us stronger Christians .... I realized I was feeling a little hungry and remembered that toast I was going to make and didn't getting around to.  After a little stomach rumble, it hit me that I never put the toast in the oven, and I had left my stove on at the highest heat .... BROIL!

Ahhhh -- I nudged Gabe in a state of panic and said, "I have to go .... I left the stove on!!"  He looked at me a little confused (since I probably mumbled and jetted out of there) because I was sure my townhouse building was going to be burned to the ground.

We live about ten minutes from the church, and I seriously was shaking the entire drive home.  Everything went through my head .... I first called my mom and asked if the stove was going to be okay at 500 degrees for over almost two hours, and she started to say "probably not" and then caught herself and said "not sure!"

I tried to focused on the things I could control:
took the side roads, rolled through every stop sign, and sped the entire way home.

Then, after talking to my mom, I thought it would be smart of me to call 911 and see if there had been a fire reported so I could prepare myself for firetrucks to be in my driveway.  Luckily, the lady said nothing had been reported!

I pulled up to my quiet house and was absolutely relieved that God was not trying to teach me a lesson.  I will say so myself, I need to slow.down. and pay better attention to the little details like this because my life would have been forever changed -- in a scaring kind of way.

**I drove back to church to pick up the hubby and inform him that our house was still standing, THANK GOD, and shared that in a state of panic I called 911.  He thought I was crazy to call them since it is "only meant to report emergencies not check on them!"

Anyone else done this?  What would you have done~?!?!

Oh my goodness!
I would have FREAKED out extremely bad!
On the other hand, since I am a 911 dispatcher, I would probably have called the police department or regular fire department line (non-emergency) to ask. But then again, what if something would of happened. All in all, I think you did the right thing by calling! I am so glad that everything turned out okay!

Yikes girl, I am the same way. There are plenty of times I think I left things on.

My mom would called me for the same reasons and when I get her her house nothing was on.

This is a scary feeling
Glad everything was ok!!!

Oh my gosh!!!! You had to have been freaking out big time! Broil, yikes! I would have totally called 911 too =) Thank God everything was OK!

I would have freaked out too! Glad everything was okay! I usually leave my straightener on all day and don't realize it until I get home :( Now the hubs has to make sure it is unplugged before he leaves for work!

I probably would have done the same thing! Better be safe than sorry! One time in high school, I left my straightener on for 2-3 hours (but didn't remember I'd left it on) and when I came home I found a burn stain on my beautiful white furniture!!! It looks horrible, and has since been covered with a cloth, but thank goodness that's all that happened. I sure learned my lesson. I'm always checking knobs and pulling cords out of the outlets. (Plus, it saves it electricity.) I'm happy your home is safe.

That is so scary! Sometimes I leave the stove on when making dinner and my boyfriend gets home and notices it. I have never left the house with it on though fortunately!!

Kassie said...

How scary!! You had me worried there for a bit. I've sadly done something similar before! I left a candle burning while I went a ran errands. I wasn't gone long, but when I realized it you can bet I SPED home!

What a wonderful post about learning to slow down. Something we could probably all do with!

I think calling 911 was good thinking! I dont think I would've thought to do that!

Thank goodness your home is intact! God does give us things in our life that point right back to Him! haha!! I'm glad you aren't homeless :)

SO scary... I agree, sometimes we need a gentle reminder that we need to slow down. Yours, not so gentle. I'm so glad that everything was ok.

Oh no!!! I'm glad to hear you still have a home.
Thankfully if there were a fire in our home, the dispatcher calls us first...thanks to our high-tech alarm :)-

I'm laughing and in shock at the same time while reading this story, because i've done these things too many times. Just a few days ago...i was in such a hurry that i left my straightener on ALL day. Oopsie-daisies!!! That thing is 350 degrees sitting on the counter next to the cord. Not very smart, but sometimes we get so busy with other things we forget.

It is good to remember to slow down and pay attention to what we do and then again to what we forget to do. Have a fabulous week hun.

You did the right thing!

Wow this sounds like me! I am constantly being told to slow down and watch what I'm doing thank goodness it was safe and that toast was probably left to ashes but not the house!

Oh Kelsey!
I know your heart must have been racing out of your church clothes! I can only imagine how relieved you were when you caught a glance of your home after that mad dash full of paniced thoughts!
You can just see your life changing during that paniced state!
I know Harley & Willis were at the forefront of your fears!
I would have been calling my mom too!
You are right...we need to slow down and be PREVENTIVE! More often than not...I'll get all the way out the door and turn back to check and see if everything is off/unplugged...flatiron is a biggie!
Glad you are safe Kelsey! XXOOXX

Aw! I haven't left anything in the stove, but I have destroyed a few things on the burners! When I first got my apartment, I had a hard time staying in the kitchen when something was cooking, so I ended up with a lot of burnt pans and smokey rooms. Another time I successfully cooked some noodles only to sit the noodle drainer in the previously scalding hot pan, and walk away to let the plastic melt all over it.

I am so glad your house did not burn down though, and thank you for helping me out with my layout as well!

I am SO BAD about leaving the iron, curling iron & flat iron on! I am SO forgetful when it comes to checking before I leave the house! I would have drove home as FAST as possible!

I'm glad your house was safe and sound when you returned. I left my straightner on all day a couple weeks ago. When I came home and saw that red light blinking I almost freaked out! I check and double check every time I leave the house now. Don't feel bad, everyone does stuff like this!

I just found your blog tonight and have loved every minute of reading! Have a great night! xoxo

I would have done the EXACT same thing. I would have probably freaked out more, jumped up from church and sprinted for the door screaming the whole way down the isle in panic.
I'm glad it turned out to be ok!

Ahhh so glad things are ok!! I have left the iron on a million times but I have nixed the habit because I am now a bit paranoid when it comes to turning off appliances. I like that the lesson learned is to take time and slow down.. it's nice to read because sometimes my life seems to be moving a million miles per second. Have a wonderful Sunday!! XO

Oh my gosh! I would have freaked too! I leave my straightener on all the time, and come home and feel heat emanating from my bathroom.

I would have done the same thing! That is so scary!! I am constantly worried I left the flat iron on to the point of leaving work a couple of times just to check.

Glad everything is ok!

These are the exact same reasons that Ryan won't let me cook! Haha! I probably would've done the same thing though; left church and SPEED home!

Glad that your home (and oven) are safe!

Oh my gosh girl! Are we long lost siblings?? When I was working at the hospital I would leave stuff on all the time! I have left a back burner on my stove on, the empty glass coffee pot, you name it!And the hospital was an hour and a half away so there was no way of getting home. I have literally made myself sick worrying before. Glad to hear all is well in the Smith house! xoxo

That is one of the WORST feelings!! It totally cracks me up that you called 911 but I probably would have done the same thing!

Yes, I have done the same thing! Usually with the straight iron. One time in college my roommate left the George Foreman on for the entire weekend! It just melted a little...

I have totally done that before... ugh.. it sends you in to a panic! I can totally realate!

AGH! I totally would have done the same thing! You were actually way more calm than I would have been...thinking to call 911 and make sure of all that! I have actually left events b/c I think I left something on and am FREAKING the whole way.. I mean.. that happens regularly. If I'd KNOWN I left it on, whoa. Jax-crazyville. I love that your husband was just like "what?!" and seemingly assumed you had it all under control.. I'm sure he was worried, but I can totally see your state of panic versus his. :) I am SO happy everything was okay, girlie. Whoa. What a scary thing.. I am so glad you remembered!

Unfortunately, YES, I have done this many times...left the oven on, not called 911:) As you get older, this gets worse...when you have children it gets even worse because your mind is never truly focused again:))) Hopefully, we will all be lucky and nothing too terrible will ever happen because of our absent little minds:)

While I hate that you had a very panicky few minutes, I certainly think it was a lesson that was meant to be learned not only by you...but all of your readers. With the holiday season coming up, we all need to slow down, enjoy life and the season. I am so glad it all turned out okay!

OMG, Im sorry about what happened to you. This same thing has happened to me with the stove and also with the straightener. So bad that I was already about 25 min away from my house heading into the city (SF) and realized...I had to drive all the way back to flip it off because the hubby was out of town =( ugh.

Glad your house was still in one piece when you got home ;) xoxo

OH LADY!!! i am the WORST at leaving my hair appliances on!!! i don't think they would (hopefully not) burn my place down...but it still freaks me out every time i get home and see that they're still plugged in!! that and it could burn them out and then i would be p.o.'d b/c i would have to buy new ones! but still this is SO scary i completely know how you feel!!

We all have those days! I forgot to blow out my candle at work one friday and didn't remember it until Sunday morning! I was freaking!!!!!!!!!! Luckily, one of the smelly boys I work with had blown it out but I learned my lesson having to come in on a Sunday morning before church!

Risa said...

I would have freaked out and left too but in your oven's defense, if it's a newer oven, it prob. has a self cleaning option which gets higher than that.

Good thing everything was in good shape!

Ha. HA HA HA. Man - I know that is not funny but love, that is pretty dang funny. I hope you are laughing at yourself now. I cannot believe you called 911. What would you have done had they said "yup, house all gone."

Geez. lol. Eat your dang toast next time! God will be thankful.

Once while C and I were out to a nice dinner, I started freaking out half way through our sushi because I realized that I didn't remember turning off my hair straightener, so after dinner we had to rush back home to check. On the way there, there was a big smoke cloud in the distance and in the direction of the house. Thank the LORD that the smoke wasn't coming from the house after all and I found my straightener safely turned off and unplugged! Whew!

P.S. I nominated you for an award!!

The SSS Sophisticate said...

I am always freaked out that I will leave something on! So scary! Glad it tured out ok! Sometimes, if I know I am going to have a panic attack later wondering if I turned something off, I tell myself out loud that I am turning it off. I sound insane, but it works. "I am turning off the curling iron."

Jenny DB said...

OK Holy shit kels you have 65 comments!! I once left a pan WITH PLASTIC wrap on it on a lit burner OVERNIGHT. Most retarded thing I've ever done and woke up to the SMELL of smoke.. almost did light the apt on fire. I don't think I would've freaked out about the oven cuz I would've been thinking.. "Well some things broil for several hours" but then again, I am WAY too casual about these things. ha

OceanDreams said...

I think it was better to call and check rather than have your house burn down, that is for sure. ;) I don't like that feeling at all. I usually use my flat iron on and freak out that it will burn down my apt. Glad your house was okay and yes, I think that is good to slow down, I do the same thing sometimes.

~KS said...

I am soooo thankful everything turned out okay... there is NO worse feeling. I feel for you...
And yes, I left the broiler on once. But I didn't know it. It was after I had my tonsils out, and I was in a pain and drug induced state... and I must have tried to turn a burner on to make soup, but turned the broiler on instead. Then I went and slept for hours... I got up at some point, and was going to head to the grocery store (I think) and as I was leaving the apartment, I smelled something burning... and stopped to check it out... only to discover the broiler was on. I don't know what stopped me (thank GOD) but I am so glad... I would've left and who knows what would have happened... As silly as it sounds, I wouldn't have cared if the house burned down (well, I would have to an extent) but I would have been heart broken if something had happened to my kitties... sheesh.
Again, so glad everything turned out okay for you!!

brit @ landlocked bride said...

I get this feeling all the time about my hair straightener. My old one used to have an automatic shut-off, but my new one doesn't. So I turn back home about once a week. Crazy.

I tagged you for an award. :)

Carol said...

I do that almost every morning with my hair straightener! The whole way to work I am thinking "did I turn it off?!"

Tracy-Girl said...

I would have freaked out too... I don't blame you for taking side roads and completely having a panic attack! The other thing you can always do in that situation is call police dispatch, but I doubt you had that number on hand, so in that case, just call the one thing you know... So glad that everything was okay... I would have been so nervous as well!
