Are you with me?

Me:  "Do you like the name Brady John?"

Husband:  "No, We don't live on a farm and our family won't be marrying their cousins!"

Me:  "Really.... "    (I was speechless)

I love love love (and love some more) a double name.  I get excited when I meet someone with a double name, I tack on Marie to a handful of loved friends, and double names overall make me happy.  They're unique and often remind me of my southern roots.

Apparently, I have some work to do before we ever have a child.  My thought behind it is that our children's first name has to be pretty fancy with their last name being THE most common name in the world.

Do you like double names?!?!  What's your favorite?

  1. Ahahaha, that's so funny!

I like double names, but only if they're good ones, haha. As in I gotta love 'em! I'm trying to think of an example but I just haven't had enough coffee yet.

  4. You're right the double name sure is a southern thing! (I'm afraid I'm with your hubby on this one...) but if you really really want one, go for it!! (though a lot of people end up just going by one of the 2 names or going by their initials... BJ?!

  5. Eh, I'm not a big fan of double names, but we met the cutest little girl the other day named Anne Conway (which was her entire first name). So I guess it works for some people... but yes it is definitely a southern thing I think!

  6. Double names just don't vibe with me. I've met a couple people that can slightly pull it off but not that much. It must be more of a southern thing.

  7. HAHA! This cracks me up because, I swear, it sounds exactly like something my finace would say! While I am from the deep south, I have never been a fan of double names. Although, one of my best friends name is Amy Claire, and I tell her all the time it's the cutest double name I've ever heard!

  9. I love double names, too.
I have my husband won over with a double name for our next daughter, but not for a boy. He said boy double names are too sissy =(
My heart is broken - ha!

  10. I love double names...especially for girls. But the names have to flow otherwise it sounds a little silly!

My aunt is Mary King and my cousin is Mary Van.

  11. ooooh he'll get used to it ;) my husband is James David and to the better part of our families our son is David Knox... And now I get to choose a GIRL one. The possibilities are endless ;)

  12. I like double names - I love my first and middle names together. I want to name my daughter 'Hadley Claire.' It kind of sounds like 'I declare' when I say it with my southern accent. :)

  13. Love double name... as long as they flow. And yes, definitely a southern thing. My brother actually has a double name, John-Paul. Some of my friends have them as well... and now that I think about it, they almost all start with Mary: Mary Helen, Mary Harmon, Mary Loyal, Margaret Ann.

  14. I only like double names if they go together. My boyfriend's family name is Thomas Blake (first, middle) but he goes by Blake. If we have a boy he wants him to have the double name, but I think it's kind of a mouthful for a little boy (or for me if I'm yelling after him! HA!) . My cousin is Carie Jo (southern) and it's so cute! I like Ann Claire, or Emma Kate like "Southerland Living" said. Very cute! If I have a girl I'm almost positive I'd give her the middle name Claire or Kate (after me).

  15. haha, I give Marie as an honorary middle name to many of my friends as well. ;)
I adore double names. My DH wants to name our first girl Mary and my compromise was that she would go by a double name. We landed on Mary Rainey(my mom's maiden name) and I LOVE it!

    Mary Grace
    Martha Lauren
    Catherine Anne
Ella Kate would have to be my favorite though!

  19. Absolutely!!! Sarah (my name) is so common and boring so I sometimes even introduce myself as Sarah Rachel! I get made fun of for it, but I don't care! My sister is Anne Marie and I love that. My cousin is Kelsey Grace which I also love.

  20. This is totally a Southern thing because I have only met one person who has a double name. I don't hate it, but I guess it's just not something we do around here.

  21. I LOVE double names as well. My husband and I have been thinking about first names so much that I completely forgot about the middle name... which is very important! But we are so far away from agreeing on anything.

  25. Oh I LOVE a double name! Maybe Gabe doesn't like it so much because Tennessee is FLOODED with them?? I want to name a little girl Layla Reese and and call her by both. Elliott hates double names too, and he grew up in Tennessee, so maybe it's a TN hatred thing?

  26. The only time parents used my full name, Nancy Marie, was when I was in trouble :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. That must run in your family!! You know if this was a boy Jo was dead set on Grady Don for the name. I agree with Gabe. Sorry.

  28. I love double names too.! My favorite is Kaden Andrew.. and for a girl Pyper Anne.

    -Mary Beth

  31. I did forget to mention however, that it is sometimes a little frustrating that people don't "get" it. For example, beth is short for Elizabeth and so some people say "So your name is Mary Beth Elizabeth." Umm no.

  32. Just don't shorten the initials.. our group of friends are all the same since grade school. We are that exceptional group who stuck together. Of course our husbands would call it B.J. as soon as it came out of the shoot!

  33. I love double names too!! Chloe Noelle is one of my favorites or Natalie Grace! and I really like the previous posts "Pyper Anne"

  34. I know what you mean about double names, and this is going to sound really conceded, but I really like mine, Sarah Mina :)

  35. I do like double names but only if they're both good names and flow well together! I love your husband's response and def see your point with wanting a first name that stands out with a more common last name!

  39. I'm right there with you on having a fancy first name! I've been thinking about that ever since I started dating my Mr. Smith. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes, I think double names are pretty! I like traditional type names put together. Anna Katherine, Jon Michael, Mary Katelyn...all of that stuff. I'm from MS though, so yes I'm southern for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Funny you mention this. When I was little people always called me by my first and middle name, Catie Jean. But I think when I was 8 or 9 I felt like it sounded like a little kids name. Still to this day I still get called that once in awhile and its only by someone I've known my whole life.
However, I think some people going by 2 names works- I just didn't like it for myself ;)

  42. I really like the name Anna Bradley.

  43. double names are okay if you're talking first and middle names. isn't that how it usually works.

or are you talking double names that are both first names? that's new to me.

  48. Awe, he totally rained on your parade! I'm not into people using their middle name as their first name...why didn't they just name you that as your first name? I don't get that...but I don't get a lot of stuff! ;)

  50. I love double names! There are quite a few around here and some are pretty cute...there is a Laura-Beth and a John-Parker. I don't think that is "hick" talk?! But maybe thats because I have lived in the south all my life. {haha} good luck! xoxo

  54. It's defintely a southern thing! It really depends on the combo. I know several Joe Don's, Joe Dan, Lee Ann, Ben Ed, etc. I think there's definitely a right and a wrong way to do double names.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I guess I've never really thought of it being a double name! haha - But I love Brady John, maybe that's because I love the name Brady!

  60. I LOVE double names. I think it comes from spending a time where there are southerners around a lot.

One of my BFFs is from South Carolina and her name is Lyndsi Shae. I LOVE that. And I tack on people's middle names as their real names sometimes -- like my ultra bff, I always call her Megan Ann.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Although I don't go by my first and middle name together it's super southern - Susanna Claire. My mom is Brenda Claire and I already know my daughter's middle name will be Claire one day.

Apparently Claire is a popular name these days. I saw several people mention it and I didn't know another Claire until I got to college.

  65. Saw your blog Miss Kelsey on your facebook, I get lots of compliments on my double name, BUT it has been a PAIN in my behind correcting people. For some reason strangers/new friends want to call me Julee, I correct them, 5 minutes later or the next meeting they call me Julee again!! Drives me nuts!

I know when I was little my mom was constantly correcting people/teachers/other moms because she didn't want the Ann to slowly drop off over the years. Something to think about! very cute blog!

  68. I'm not a fan of the double name. I have to agree with your husband on this one. Looks like you have some training to do before you have kids! Maybe you can tackle this issue after March Madness. Good luck.
